Assignment 2: Sales Data Analysis

Objective: Students will input and analyze sales data using basic formulas and create visualizations to interpret the data.

Instructions:

  1. Create the Spreadsheet Layout:
    • Open a new spreadsheet in Excel, Google Sheets, or another spreadsheet software.
    • Label the columns as follows:
      • Column A: Product Name
      • Column B: Units Sold
      • Column C: Unit Price
      • Column D: Total Sales
  2. Input Data:
    • In Column A (Product Name), list 10 different fictional products (e.g., T-shirts, Laptops, Headphones).
    • In Column B (Units Sold), input the number of units sold for each product. Use realistic figures (e.g., 120, 85, 230).
    • In Column C (Unit Price), enter the price for each product (e.g., $15, $500, $30).
  3. Calculate Total Sales:
    • In Column D (Total Sales), calculate the total sales for each product using the formula =B2*C2. This formula multiplies the number of units sold by the unit price.
    • Drag the formula down from D2 to D11 to calculate the total sales for all products.
  4. Calculate Overall Sales:
    • Below your data (e.g., in cell D13), use the SUM function to calculate the overall sales for all products: =SUM(D2:D11).
  5. Calculate Averages:
    • In a separate cell (e.g., F2), calculate the average units sold using =AVERAGE(B2:B11).
    • In F3, calculate the average unit price using =AVERAGE(C2:C11).
    • In F4, calculate the average total sales using =AVERAGE(D2:D11).
  6. Create Charts:
    • Highlight the data in columns A and D.
    • Go to the “Insert” tab and choose a chart type (e.g., Bar Chart) to visualize the total sales for each product.
    • Add a title to the chart (e.g., “Total Sales by Product”).
  7. Formatting and Presentation:
    • Apply formatting to the spreadsheet for better readability:
      • Bold headers (Row 1).
      • Format the currency columns (C and D) to display as currency ($).
      • Add borders around the data range.
    • Save the spreadsheet with an appropriate name (e.g., “Sales_Data”).

2B. Spreadsheet Setup for Stock Prices

1. Basic Structure

  1. Open a New Spreadsheet:
    • Excel: Open Excel and create a new workbook.
    • Google Sheets: Open Google Sheets and create a new spreadsheet.
  2. Sheet Layout:
    • Column A: Date
    • Column B: Stock Symbol
    • Column C: Opening Price
    • Column D: Closing Price
    • Column E: Highest Price
    • Column F: Lowest Price
    • Column G: Volume
    • Column H: Daily Change
    • Column I: % Change

2. Input Data

Enter your stock data into the corresponding columns. For example:

Date Stock Symbol Opening Price Closing Price Highest Price Lowest Price Volume Daily Change % Change
2024-09-01 AAPL 175.00 177.50 179.00 174.50 1000000

3. Formulas

Here are the formulas for the relevant columns:

  1. Daily Change (Column H):
    • Formula: =D2 - C2
    • Explanation: This calculates the difference between the closing price and the opening price.
  2. % Change (Column I):
    • Formula: =(H2 / C2) select percentage icon for cell
    • Explanation: This calculates the percentage change based on the daily change divided by the opening price.
  1.

ADD 2 MORE STOCKS USING REAL NUMBERS OF STOCKS YOU CAN FIND – USE THEIR SYMBOL

Example Spreadsheet

Here’s how a portion of your spreadsheet might look with formulas in place:

Date Stock Symbol Opening Price Closing Price Highest Price Lowest Price Volume Daily Change % Change
2024-09-01 AAPL 175.00 177.50 179.00 174.50 1000000 2.50 1.43%
2024-09-02 BSC 177.50 180.00 182.00 176.00 1050000 2.50 1.41%
2024-09-03 DNI 180.00 178.00 181.00 177.00 1100000 -2.00 -1.11%
